1, in this ACT,the following terms mean:
1.1 crew: All persons employed on the ship carrying out such work as is covered by the Act;
1.2 mate:any of the deck officers,the master excepted;
1.3 chief engineer: the officer in charge of the engin-room;
1.4 engineer: any of the engine-room officers
1.5 catering personnel: crewmembers employed to carry out work in connection with providing food and sercice for the crew or passengers,
1.6 office staff:Crew members employed to do office work or the like,
1.7 passenger ship: a ship that holds, or in compliance with the regulations currently in force is requred to hold, a passenger certificate, and that is used for the carriage of passengers.
1.8 day: the period from 0000hrs to 2400hrs,
1.9 week: the period from 0000hrs on MOnday to 2400hrs,on sunday.
1.10 holidays: sundays, and the holidays and festivals prescribed in this country. the period from 1500hrs to 2400hrs. on easter eve,whitsun Eve,Christmas Eve and New year's Eve shall be regards as equivalent to holidays.
1.11 weekdays: days other than holidays,
1012 domestic voyages: Trade on lakes and rivers in Norway and voyages on the norwegian coast, apart from Svalbard and Jan Mayen,
1.13 forign voyages: All voyages beyond domestic voyages,
1.14 shift system: A system according to which the crew, or part of the crew, will serve on and where the relieved crew may leave the ship,
1.15 watch system: a system according to which working hours of the crew, wholly or in part, will be divided into watched, and the entire crew will normally remain on board.
2. if for part of a voyage, a ship will pass beyond the boundaries of domestis voyages,her whole voyage shall be regards as a forein voyage, unless the vessel in distress has been forced beyond the area that the voyage was to have covered.
3. in calculations of working hours in accordance with this Act meal breaks shall be expected.
