# The scope of this act
*1.Subject to the exceptions mentioned below, this ACT shall apply to work carried out by persons employed in Norweigian ships in the ship's service, or otherwise on board, or elsewhere, on the orders of a superior.
if a ship is operated jiontly by several persons on their own account and some of them carry out work on board, these shall be regarded as employed on the ship. Independent contractors who carry out work on board in connection with the operation of the ship are also regarded as employed on the ship.
*2 this act does not apply to work carried out by:
2.1 master of a ship where minimum 3 additional persons are employed;
2.2 the chief mate seving on a ship with more than 3 mates, and whose service is not divides into watches;
2.3 the chief engingeer on ships having more than 1 engineer;
2.4 a steward having mimmum 3 subordiates, or a smaller number if that has been agreed upon between the organizations of owers and seaman;
2.5 a person in charge of a department on board who has minimum 3 subordinates and whose sercice is not divided into watches;
2.6 a purser;
2.7 a pilot who is not a member of the crew;
2.8 a physician and a dentist;
2.9 a person employed exclusively to carry out work in connection with nursing of patients;
2.10 a person whose duties are exclusively connected with the cargo on board and who is not in the owner's service;
2.11 a person working exclusively on his own account and does not carry out work on board in connection with the operation of the shp;
2.12 a person belonging to the catering personnel or the office staff when designated as a superior through agreement between the organizations of owners and seaman;
2.13 persons employed on :
2.13.1 ships belonging to the Armed Forces and not used commercially for the carriage of cargo or passengers;
2.13.2 ships of less than 15 meters in extreme length used in domestic trade only, unless they are of more than 10 metres in extreme length and are passenger ships or carry goods in regular service;
2.13.3 fishing vessels whalers sealers, etc. when used as such or for the carriage of their own catch, alone or in conjuction with that of orders;
2.13.4 ships for the processing of fishing, whaling or sealing products etc, used solely for this purpose or for the carriage of their own products, alone or in conjunction with those of others;
2.13.5 pleasure craft;
2.13.6 sailing ships without any auxiliaary propulsion engine;
2.13.7 hospital ships dredgers, and rescue vessels , when used as such;
2.13.8 mobiledrilling platforms and other mobile off-shor installations.
*3 when there are special resons for doing so, the King may grant exemptions from the act for individual persons or ships or groups of such.the king may issue regulations' concerning working hours, remuneration for overtime work, and the keeping and format of time sheets, overtime journals and overtime log book for persons who pursuant to the first sentence are exempted from the act. before a decision is made pursuant to the first and second sentences, the opinion of the Advisory Council(ef&17) shall be obtained.
4 The King may prepare regulation on working hours, remuneration for overtime work,and the keeping and format of time sheets, of overtime registers and overtime books for persons mentioned in subsetion 2.13 and persons emplyed on board barges or lighters.
